The Public
Computers are bought from approved IT consultancies that work with the Trusted Computing Project. The computers can be very low power devices that have a very low carbon foot print - typically saving over one tonne of carbon per year compared with PCs that run Microsoft Windows. Hardware Costs The cost of these devices varies according to the supplier. To find a local supplier please click on the partners icon. Installation Prior to the computer being purchased a simple questionair will need to be answered giving details of your Internet Service Provider (ISP), your existing printer you will require connecting to the computer, etc. This is because some ISPs only support Microsoft Windows in which case the ISP will have to be changed. The computers will be delivered and installed by a trained technician. In the UK all technicians will have had a Criminal Record Bureau (CRB) check from the Home Office. The technician will typically spend 90 minutes installing the computer, connecting it to the Internet and to printers and showing how to use it. This work is charged for and each TCP partner will have a list of charges. This is the only time that a visit will be required from a support person. From this point on all support will be provided over the Internet. The typical cost for installation is 150€ in Europe, £100 in UK and $ 200 In the USA Software support. An optional annual software support fee of 75€ in Europe, £50. in UK and $ 100 In the USA is charged. For this fee the software on the computer is automatically kept up to date without any user involvement. Having all computers with an identical software configuration enables a highly efficient support organisation where support is given over the Internet. the support organisation. User Support A support service, using Internet telephony, is provided. This is available only to those who are up to date with their software support fees. A call is made to a call centre. The support engineer, with the user's permission, will typically log on to the computer over the Internet, see what is happening and offer advice. This service is charged on a per call basis plus the length of the call. Typical costs are 15€ (£10, US$20) for a call of up to 5 minutes plus 1.5€ (£1, US$2) for each subsequent minute. Suppliers of e-Services / e-Government The concerns about the lack of security is inhibiting the take up of e-Services / e-Government. The Trusted Computing Architecture addresses these issues. - Be confident of the integrity and security of the software on the cleint device;
- Ensure secure messaging over the Internet.
The Trusted Computing Project provides advice to its members on the issues of secure e-Services / e-Government by: - Holding regular members meetings for which there is a delegate fee for attending;
- Running teleconferences to enable members to share experiences and input to the development program;
- Using the project's Web site to keep members up to date with developments;
- Enabling members to share experiences by providing a wiki.
